Greek coastguard rescues 108 migrants off Mykonos, four missing

ATHENS (Reuters) – Greece’s coastguard continued to seek for four missing migrants off the island of Mykonos on Sunday after rescuing one other 108 migrants on a sailboat that despatched a misery sign late on Saturday, officers mentioned.

A coastguard vessel positioned the sailboat about 1.8 nautical miles southeast of Delos, a small island close to Mykonos. The sailboat was taking in water and was towed safely to a Mykonos port.

Mykonos is a well-liked island within the Aegean sea recognized for its vibrant nightlife.

The nationality of the 108 rescued migrants, amongst them 24 ladies and 21 youngsters, had not but been decided, coastgurad officers mentioned. None wore life vests.

Greece is the principle route into the European Union for asylum-seekers arriving from Turkey. The variety of arrivals has fallen sharply since 2016 after the EU and Ankara agreed a deal to cease migrants from crossing to Greece.
