Malaysia remains committed towards nuclear disarmament

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia reaffirms its unwavering dedication towards nuclear disarmament and can proceed to work carefully with different companions to achieve a world free from the specter of nuclear weapons.

The Foreign Ministry (Wisma Putra) in an announcement on Saturday (Jan 22) stated Malaysia made this comment because it welcomed the primary anniversary of the entry into pressure of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) noticed in the present day.

“Malaysia believes that the TPNW strengthens the worldwide norms in opposition to the specter of nuclear weapons and that it’s crucial for the Treaty to succeed in universality as quickly as doable.

“On this necessary event, Malaysia continues to encourage different international locations to expedite their accessions to the Treaty as a manifestation of their dedication towards normal and full disarmament and whole elimination of nuclear weapons,” stated the assertion.

The Treaty is the primary legally binding worldwide instrument to comprehensively prohibit all actions associated to nuclear weapons, together with their growth, testing, manufacturing, acquisition, possession, stockpiling, deployment and use.

Malaysia signed the TPNW as quickly because it was opened for signature on Sept 20, 2017 and ratified the Treaty on Sept 30, 2020, making Malaysia the forty sixth State Party to the TPNW.

To date, 86 states have signed and 59 states have ratified the Treaty. – Bernama
