A NEWSPAPER vendor in Ipoh was attacked with a parang by a young couple trying to rob her, Makkal Osai reported.

Rajeswari Thirunavukkarasu, 61, did not suspect anything amiss when a young man entered her shop on the pretext of buying cigarettes. However, he suddenly attacked the shop owner with a parang and managed to escape with cash from the counter, her handphone and purse.

Upon hearing the shopkeeper’s screams, people from the neighbouring shops rushed over to help.

But the attacker and his accomplice, believed to be his girlfriend, managed to flee on a motorbike.

The victim needed seven stitches for the wound on her head but was lucky to escape serious injury. She also said she has put up steel grilles in front of her shop to prevent any further incidents.

> The daily also reported that a couple in Tamil Nadu, India, who got married despite their families’ objections, were stabbed while seeking protection at a police station.

The couple eloped and married but sought police protection at the station when the girl’s family began hunting for them.

When the police called in the families to advise them, the girl’s family demanded she abandon her husband and return with them.

When Ramya refused, her brother, Ram Kumar, stabbed her and Anand who came to her aid.

Police quickly arrested the brother, Ramya’s father Kalyana Sundaram, and Ram Kumar’s friend Vimal, who were involved in the attack.

The couple were admitted to the Tirunelveli hospital.

Anand Raj, an engineering graduate working in a bank, had been dating Ramya for four years.

Both families objected to the relationship as they are from different communities or castes.
