PETALING JAYA: Umno has denied that an emergency meeting will be held by its political bureau to deliberate calls by the Malay Rulers for Parliament to reconvene immediately.

According to Sinar Harian, Umno executive secretary Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan said no invitations were issued to the media by the party as there was no emergency political bureau meeting on Sunday night (June 20).

“It is Sunday and there are no meetings on this day. The invitation was ‘spread by someone’,” he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.

Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan also issued a denial on Twitter on Sunday.

“My office didn’t call the media for any programmes today (June 20),” he said, while dismissing it as fake news.

Ahmad Maslan said there has already been a total of three fake news attempts on Umno this week alone.

Among them is a claim that Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein was sacked by the party president, and another claim that Umno ministers were also summoned by the party president.

The political temperature in the country has risen recently after a series of high-level audiences between political party leaders with the King that took place over the previous week.

Last Wednesday (June 16), the King had called for Parliament to be reconvene as soon as possible in order to allow the Emergency Ordinance and the National Recovery Plan to be debated by MPs.

On Friday (June 18), Istana Negara attracted public attention after it uploaded on Facebook an excerpt of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s views for the government to reconvene the Parliament as soon as possible.

Istana Negara had earlier deleted that post, and then reposted it again on its Facebook and Instagram pages, saying that the earlier excerpt was deleted to make a correction.
