China’s social media platform Weibo has blocked the accounts of controversial Malaysian rapper Namewee and Australian singer Kimberley Chen after they launched a satirical duet, in response to a report on the Taiwan Information web site on Saturday (Oct 16)
The 2 Taiwan-based singers, who launched the Mandarin ballad Fragile final Friday (Oct 15), appeared in a pink-themed music video which rapidly went viral.
The tune, written by Namewee, 38, contained stabs at Chinese language chief Xi Jinping and touched on delicate matters reminiscent of censorship, Covid-19 and the Uighurs.
The music video, which attracted a couple of million views on YouTube inside a day, opens with the warning: “Please be cautious in case you are fragile pink”.
Directed by Namewee, who has stirred controversy up to now together with his songs, the most recent video reveals a panda determine dancing and dealing within the background, whereas the 2 singers make references to the Covid-19 pandemic by singing concerning the love for “canines, cats, bats and civets”.
One line of the tune goes: “It is unlawful to breach the firewall, you will be missed if the Pooh discovers it.”
It’s a dig at Xi, who had been in comparison with the character Winnie the Pooh in memes on social media.
The time period “widespread prosperity”, the theme of Xi’s most up-to-date political marketing campaign, can be within the lyrics.
After Chen’s Weibo account was blocked, the 27-year-old posted a clip of herself singing on Instagram and Fb: “Sorry to have harm you. It does not matter if I haven’t got Weibo. I nonetheless have Instagram. I nonetheless have Fb.”
