Tennis: Tennis-Kyrgios says Sydney pullout due to COVID-19

SYDNEY (Reuters) – Nick Kyrgios stated on Monday that he had pulled out of the Sydney Tennis Classic after testing optimistic for COVID-19, however hoped to be on the Australian Open subsequent week “if all goes effectively”.

Australian Kyrgios had withdrawn from the Melbourne Summer Set ATP event final week due to bronchial asthma, in accordance to the organisers, and pulled out of his conflict with Italian seventh seed Fabio Fognini on Monday.

“I simply need to be open and clear with everybody, the rationale I’ve had to pull out of Sydney is as a result of I examined optimistic for COVID,” Kyrgios stated on Instagram.

“I’m feeling wholesome in the meanwhile with no signs. I want everybody all one of the best and to keep secure the place you may. If all goes effectively I’ll see you all on the Australian Open.”

Kyrgios, a crowd favorite at Melbourne Park, has not performed since late September due to knee points and has slipped to 114th within the rankings.

He was dominated out of competition for the Australian crew for the season-opening ATP Cup in Sydney this month.

The 26-year-old has performed solely 15 matches in 2021, profitable seven of them and heads into the 12 months’s first Grand Slam with no tune-up matches below his belt.

The Australian Open begins on Jan. 17.
