PETALING JAYA: More than 80% of new Covid-19 infections were either those unvaccinated or who had not received their second dose, says Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

There were 22,262 new cases, bringing Malaysia’s cumulative Covid-19 numbers to 1,535,286.

“In total, 18,374 (82.5%) of the cases (yesterday) had no vaccination, or had incomplete vaccination.

“Get the Covid-19 vaccine to reduce the risk of serious infections. It is hoped that this will reduce Covid-19 infections in the country, especially cases in Categories 3 to 5,” he said in a statement.

Dr Noor Hisham said of the new daily cases, 469 (2.1%) were in Categories 3, 4 and 5 while 21,793 (97.9%) were in Categories 1 and 2.

This is based on the current clinical condition of the cases at the point that they were diagnosed with Covid-19.

Some of the cases remained in the same category throughout the period of infection.

However, other cases experienced a change in their health status, either improving to a lower category or declining to a higher category, he added.

Category 1 means a patient is asymptomatic. Category 2 is for those with mild symptoms.

Category 3 cases experience pneumonia while cases in Category 4 have pneumonia and require oxygen. Category 5 patients are in a critical stage requiring ventilator support.

There were also 18,576 recoveries nationwide for a total of 1,260,470 recoveries to date. In the last 24-hour period, 223 people succumbed to Covid-19, and Malaysia’s total Covid-19 death toll stands at 13,936.

Of the new cases, 40 were imported while 22,222 were local infections.

Selangor continued to record the most cases with 7,011 new infections, followed by Sabah (2,651), Sarawak (1,964), Kedah (1,880), Johor (1,558), Penang (1,459), and Kuala Lumpur (1,220).

The three states that recorded the fewest cases were Putrajaya (41), Perlis (38), and Labuan (nine).

Of the 260,880 active cases, 1,035 are in intensive care units, with 513 requiring ventilator support.

There were also 32 new Covid-19 clusters reported, bringing the total number of active clusters to 1,435.

The new clusters were from workplaces (18), communities (13), and a religious cluster.
