About 670 people are estimated to be buried beneath a large landslide in Papua New Guinea, a UN official says.

The head of the International Organization for Migration in Papua New Guinea, Serhan Aktoprak, mentioned the impression of Friday’s landslide within the nation’s remoted Enga province was larger than initially thought.

“There are an estimated 150-plus homes now buried,” Mr Aktoprak mentioned.

The affected areas are within the highlands of Enga, within the north of the island nation within the south-west Pacific.

Mr Aktoprak mentioned rescuers have been in danger as a result of “the land nonetheless sliding”.

“The water is operating and that is creating a large threat for everybody concerned,” he mentioned.
