KOTA KINABALU: The Labuan approach should be adopted for Sabah so that more people can be vaccinated rapidly, says Federation of Chinese Associations (FCAS) president Tan Sri TC Goh.

He said the Federal Government should adopt this approach so more people can complete both doses of their Covid-19 vaccination.

“It has been widely reported that the numbers of daily Covid-19 cases in the Federal Territory of Labuan have dropped significantly after a vast majority of its population completed two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine,” he said.

He added that the latest official data indicated that Sabah is currently still the state with lowest vaccination rate in the country.

There is an urgent need for the Federal Government to improve the vaccination rate in Sabah,” Goh said.

Goh said this in response to a recent Facebook post by Health director general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah

In a posting on his Facebook account on Sunday (July 18), Dr Noor Hisham said that as of Saturday (July 17), 61.9% of the population in Labuan has received the first dose of their Covid-19 vaccination, and 42.7% have received their second dose.

He also said 90% of those who received the first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine are aged 18 and above, and 62% of adults have received their second dose.

Responding to this, Goh – who is also the President of the Federation of Sabah and Labuan Hokkien Associations – (FSLHA) said that he hoped the Federal Government could expedite the implementation of the Labuan approach for Sabah.

Goh also said that he welcomes and supports the statement by new Sabah Health director Dr Rose Nani Mudin that her department is in the midst of mobilising all its 26,000 healthcare workers to improve vaccination process throughout the state.

He hopes such a move would receive the full cooperation and support of the Federal Government and the Health Ministry.
