Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has been suspended for an extra match and fined £100,000 after admitting he acted in an improper method following his crimson card in a win at Newcastle United.

The defender was despatched off within the twenty eighth minute for fouling Alexander Isak.

Van Dijk appeared to remonstrate with referee John Brooks previous to strolling off the pitch.

He was suspended in opposition to Aston Villa on 3 September and can now be unavailable to face Wolves on 16 September.

“The defender admitted that he acted in an improper method and used abusive and insulting phrases in the direction of a match official after being despatched off within the twenty ninth minute, and the sanctions have been subsequently imposed by an impartial regulatory fee,” stated an FA assertion.
