Wildfire rages near Athens, threatens homes

ATHENS (Reuters) – A wildfire raged on the outskirts of Athens on Saturday, threatening homes and energy traces, a hearth brigade official stated.

Fanned by sturdy winds, the hearth rapidly unfold throughout the slopes of Mount Hymettus which overlooks the Greek capital, sending thick clouds of smoke over the southern suburbs.

Civil safety authorities began precautionary evacuations in some elements of the Voula and Glyfada areas about 20 kilometres from Athens centre.

“The winds are very intense, we’ve harm in a couple of homes and a few automobiles, no accidents,” stated the hearth brigade official who declined to be named.

More than 100 firefighters aided by six firefighting plane and 4 helicopters fought the blaze that began after noon within the metropolis’s suburb of Glyfada, the hearth brigade stated.

A spate of wildfires scorched about 300,000 acres of forest and bushland in several elements of Greece final summer season, amid the nation’s worst heatwave in 30 years.
