KOTA KINABALU: A woman who wanted to gain new experience by taking up an “amazing” job offer in Australia, instead learnt a painful lesson when she found out that she had been cheated.

The 50-year-old had transferred over RM6,000 of her savings to a man who claimed to be able to help arrange her travel there, only to find out that it was all a lie.

Kota Kinabalu Commercial Crime Investigation Unit chief Supt G. Moses Govindarajoo said the victim found out she was cheated when the supposed plane tickets she received proved to be fake.

“The victim had made two payments to two bank accounts under the instructions of a man with a local name here, one amounting to RM2,800 on July 8 and another RM3,250 on July 26,” he said when contacted.

Supt Moses said the victim was told that the payments were to arrange for her visa, plane tickets and other procedures to Australia.

He said a ticket was later sent to her but she found that it was fake after checking with the airline it was supposedly bought from.

The woman later lodged a police report over the matter.

Supt Moses said the case is being investigated under cheating.

“Be extra cautious when dealing with online payment and transactions,” he said.
