SHAH ALAM: The Selangor state government is concerned that the strict imposition of a full movement control order (MCO) will have adverse effects on the state and its people.

State Public Health, Unity, Women Empowerment and Family Committee chairman Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud told a press conference on Wednesday (May 19) that livelihoods will be impacted in the event of a full MCO.

“People must be able to go to work,” said Dr Siti Mariah, adding that since MCO 3.0 was already in place, perhaps it could be tightened in certain locations.

Selangor Covid-19 Task Force chairman Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, who was also at the press conference, concurred.

He explained that the situation in Selangor was under control.

Even though the numbers were high, he said, the percentage of infection was lower in comparison with other states such as Kelantan and Pahang.

Dr Siti Mariah also said the state was doing everything that was necessary, such as community screening, to prevent Covid-19 infections from becoming widespread.

The Federal Government is considering implementing a full MCO in Selangor in view of the high number of cases in the state.

On Monday (May 17) Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba said a stricter enforcement of the standard operating procedures (SOP) and the MCO would be considered in Selangor if current measures were not sufficient to curb the spread of the virus.

“I agree with the proposal for a stricter enforcement of the SOPs and MCO if the ongoing measures are unable to contain the spread of the virus.

“The proposal to implement a full MCO is something that we can consider (to propose to the National Security Council),” Dr Adham said during the Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force weekly press conference on Monday.
