NIBONG TEBAL: An engineer, suspected to be driving under the influence of alcohol, allegedly rammed his vehicle into a police roadblock at Jalan Besar here on Thursday (Sept 2) night.

South Seberang Prai OCPD Supt Lee Chong Chern said in the 8.15pm incident, the 41-year-old suspect was travelling from Bukit Mertajam to Simpang Empat when he suddenly swerved to the left of the road.

“The suspect ignored the warning shouts by Rela personnel, and several policemen on duty at the roadblock had to avoid being hit by the suspect’s car,” he said in a statement on Friday (Sept 3).

Supt Lee said the suspect did not slow down the car or stop at the roadblock, instead, he crashed through it and sped off.

He said no one was injured, but a police sign, a police shade (payung polis), a beacon light, and several safety cones were dragged about 200m from the roadblock.

“The suspect tried to evade by driving off towards Jalan Simpang Ampat, but police managed to corner him,” he said.

Supt Lee said during inspection, police suspected the man was intoxicated as he was reeking of alcohol.

The suspect was brought to the Simpang Ampat police station for further investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 45 of the Road Transport Act 1987.
