A painting by Dutch summary painter Piet Mondrian has been hanging upside down for 77 years, says a curator on the German museum.
A big retrospective of the avant garde artist’s work went on show on Saturday on the Kunstsammlung museum in Dusseldorf, and one of many items on present is New York City 1, painted in 1941.
But as she ready for the exhibition, curator Susanne Meyer-Buser found the painting had been introduced to the general public slightly in a different way from the way it was maybe supposed to be on present.
“In a photograph from 1944, I noticed that the canvas was the opposite means round on an easel. It intrigued me,” Meyer-Buser advised German day by day Suddeutsche Zeitung.
The painting, consisting of a number of traces in blue, crimson and yellow intersecting at proper angles, was then displayed shortly after within the fallacious means at MoMA in New York, the curator stated.
It was then transferred to the Dusseldorf museum in 1980 and placed on present in the identical means.
The error may have been made as a result of “the painting does not have a signature”, in line with Meyer-Buser.
The choice to current the work within the method it has been for many years was most likely decided by “the artist’s title inscribed on the again of the body by the administrator of the (artist’s property)” on the time of Mondrian’s demise in 1944.
Mondrian, born in 1872, was a famous exponent of the Twenties summary artwork motion generally known as “De Stijl” and was one of the crucial influential figures in trendy artwork within the twentieth century.
