The leeches quickly discovered us, crawling into our socks and up our legs. We emerged at round 2,500m to discover a world of blackened, twisted bushes, scorched by a latest eruption. Clouds of sulphurous gases swirled across the crater and fissures opened up within the rock simply metres away, revealing molten rock beneath. (*13*)
