KUANTAN: Proactive measures are wanted to acquire Unesco Global Geopark standing for the Lipis district, mentioned Pahang Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail

He mentioned this was determined on the Pahang State Parks Corporation members’ assembly which he chaired on Tuesday.

“A geopark is a region that contains geological heritage sites and landscapes of international importance.

“It is managed holistically based on the concepts of conservation, preservation, education and sustainable development,” he mentioned yesterday.

Wan Rosdy mentioned the distinctiveness of the Lipis district included the presence of rock formation from the Devonian to center Permian intervals, from 420 million to 270 million years in the past, in Pos Betau – evident from the collision of two tectonic plates that fashioned Peninsular Malaysia.

“As a first step, the Pahang government has held discussions with the Minerals and Geoscience Department and the Energy and Natural Resources Ministry… to establish a Lipis Geopark Development Committee that covers human and financial resources and gain recognition as a National Geopark,” he mentioned.

He mentioned this recognition was one of many situations set to qualify the proposed Lipis Geopark as a nominated Unesco Global Geopark.
