The Selangor government will be rolling out its Data Internet Selangor plan starting October, to provide subsidised Internet for up to 70,000 residents.

The plan will provide 12 months of free Internet with specific data quotas, accessible using a SIM card.

It is available for certain groups including students, single parents, the elderly, orang asli, farmers, online business owners, and gig economy workers, among others.

On its website, it explained that there were three packages recipients could chose from: Life 20 Prepaid (a mobile virtual network operator running on Digi’s network), Celcom B40 Selangor Prepaid or TM Prepaid #Bebas under Unifi.

The Life 20 prepaid package includes 15GB of free data quota, 100 free minutes of call time and 10 free SMS monthly.

It also comes bundled with health insurance coverage for hospitalisation and Covid-19 protection, free content on streaming service Getplay, and one RM30 cash voucher to trade in a phone via trade-in service Instacash.

The Celcom package offers 15GB of monthly data, though users have to pay for cellular calls or SMS.

The Unifi package comes with 45GB of monthly data, though also without free cellular call minutes or SMS.

The page stated that all packages are paid for by Menteri Besar Selangor Incorporated (MBI), a body that was established to administer assets and investments of the state government. However, any usage exceeding the allocated quota would need to be paid by the subscriber.

Registration for the plan will run until Sept 15, with SIM cards expected to be delivered to recipients by Oct 1.
