KUALA LUMPUR: The UMW Group concluded 2021 on a powerful footing with automotive gross sales of 32,229 items in December 2021.

In an announcement Friday, UMW stated each UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) and UMW’s affiliate firm, Perodua, continued to register greater gross sales regardless of the challenges caused by the flooding in December 2021.

“UMWT registered sales of 9,289 units in December 2021, 9.4% higher compared with the 8,487 units sold in November 2021.

“For the full year, UMWT surpassed its 2021 sales target of 62,000 units with a total delivery of 72,394 units, 22.0% more than the 59,320 units registered in 2020,” it stated.

As a end result, UMWT efficiently regained the management of the non-National phase in the home automotive market.

“Toyota Vios continues to be the best-selling model with 31% of its total sales, followed by the Hilux and Yaris,” it stated.

It added that UMWT’s first regionally assembled Toyota mannequin with Hybrid Electric Technology, Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid could be launched right now.

UMW Holdings Bhd president and group CEO Datuk Ahmad Fuaad Kenali stated: “Both UMWT and Perodua have shown resilience and performed well for the year considering the headwinds and challenges including the semiconductor chips shortage and disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and flooding.”

“Going forward, the encouraging outstanding order book, introduction of new models as well as the extension of the sales tax exemption until June 30, 2022, are expected to sustain the automotive sales recovery in 2022.

“We wish to express our appreciation and thank you to our customers for their continuous support and we look forward to serving them better in 2022,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Perodua closed 2021 with gross sales of twenty-two,940 items in December, 13.0% greater than the 20,299 items bought in November 2021, primarily because of the restoration in the provision chain.

“Perodua registered a total sales of 190,291 units in 2021, 13.6% lower than the 220,154 units sold in 2020,” it stated, including that gross sales have been affected by the Full Movement Control Order, the semiconductor chips scarcity and the flooding in December.

“Perodua’s best-selling models for the year were the Myvi, followed by the Axia and Bezza.

“Moving forward, the newly launched facelift version of the highly-popular Myvi is expected to contribute positively in 2022,” it stated.
